"She must have been so scared. Only eighteen."

"Maybe she had a plan. Some eighteen-year-olds think they have the world all figured out." Amy paused. "Or maybe the father of the baby had a plan."

"Which she might or might not have agreed w^ith." Does Amy have any idea about Drew^ and Crystal? Maggie wondered. Could I possibly have been mistaken in what I saw? No; she was quite sure about what had been happening in that bedroom. Should she tell the police? None of the answers were ones she wanted to act on.

They were both silent for a few moments.

"Let's go and get those flowers. There's a florist's shop in Waymouth. Then we'll go and see Rachel. I don't know what we can say that will mean anything. But I'll feel better after we've done it."

They choose a large bouquet of white marigolds and delphiniums and baby's breath with a few daisies. The grouping looked young and innocent. Crystal had at least been young.

Other neighbors must have had the same thought; several cars were in the Porters' driveway.

"I'm nervous. Here I am, the neighbor from away who owns the home where Crystal was killed, and all of these cars probably belong to family and longtime friends." Amy sat for a moment.

"We don't have to stay long. Just pay our respects," Maggie said quietly. "If you don't go, then someone will question that too. And you did get to know Crystal well this summer." Or at least you thought you knew Crystal well, she added to herself.

They didn't need to knock on the door; Shirley Steele opened it. She looked Amy and Maggie up and down and then said loudly, in the direction of the rest of the house. "It's so nice of you to come. And you've brought flowers."
